PART 1

How to Create a Folder for your Download Files on Your Windows98/2000 Desktop

A folder holds other files/programs and/or folders.

  • Click the right button of your mouse on a blank area of your Windows98/2000 Desktop.
  • When the shortcut menu appears, choose New...Folder (use the left button for these)
  • A yellow folder will appear that says "New Folder" and the text will be highlighted in blue. (Do not try to erase the  highlighting or click in box, because as soon as you start to type, the other information will disappear. Type "Download Files" for the name of the folder.
  • Click on the desktop after typing the name for the folder using your left mouse button. (You will see your new yellow folder with the name you typed. (If you wish to open it, you can double click on the folder and it will open. The folder will be empty until you put something in it.)

             PART 2

  • Go on-line to the Internet and to the website that has the software/file you want to download.

    Note: The website may need the following information prior to you downloading the software: Your operating system and Language. Some sites also require you to fill in a form and include your e-mail address.

    Oftentimes, the size of the file and an approximation as to how long it will take to download will be indicated.

  • There will be a link on the site that says, "Download" or "Click Here to Download, and there may be a listing of links you can click on to download from. ". Click on the appropriate link. A dialog box will appear that may say "Save As" or "Save It to Disk. The wording depends on if you are using Netscape or Internet Explorer as your browser.

    Netscape Users: When the Save As dialog box appears, you will now need to make sure the Download folder that you created is open. This is the folder where your file is going to be saved to.

    Look towards the top of the Save As dialog box that you have in front of you and you will see a black triangle pointing down. Click on the triangle and then scroll down if necessary until you see the Download folder you created. When you find it, double click on it to open it up.

  • Internet Explorer Users: Initially, after you click on your download link, a dialog box will pop up and says "File Download". Then another dialog box appears and there will be an option that says "Save It to Disk". Click OK. Now you will see the Save As dialog box. Follow the steps indicated above for Netscape Users when you see the Save As dialog box to open up your Download folder that you created on your desktop.
  • Now that you have your Download folder open. click on the Save button in your Save As dialog box. The file will be saved to your Download folder and you will be able to easily find it after the download process. When the downloading process starts, there will be a dialog box in front of you indicating the time that it is going to take to download your file to your folder and showing percentages. When the percentage reaches 100% and disappears, the download is complete.

              PART 3

              How to Install Your File

  • If the file has an "EXE" extension, it will be a self-extracting file. To install, double click on the filename and you will be prompted through the installation of the software onto your computer.

    OR

  • If the file has an "ZIP" extension, you will need to use a program utility that unzips files. The file that has a zip extension is called a Zip file. You can click on our link to the "Winzip" utility on this page, which will take you to the site where you can download the unzipping utility and install on your computer on a trial basis. The file will be a "EXE" type file.

    Once you have your unzip utility installed and you double click on your downloaded zip file, the Winzip program will take over and prompt you through the installation of your software.
